10 Principles to Achieving Balance
You'll never achieve total balance in your life. It's a fact so get over it. Now that you know that, here are 10 things for busy entrepreneurs to keep in mind that are most likely to lead you to a "more balanced" life. These are some things that I've learned over the years. I can't claim that they are my original thoughts but these are the principles that keep resurfacing. Embrace these and let these simple principles fill your life with a feeling of accomplishment.
- Take time to reflect and meditate-- the answer comes from finding internal peace.
- Assess your priorities-- are you doing what you want to be doing? what can you do to change that?
- Keep a journal- you'll be amazed how things increase in clarity as you write them down.
- Don't sweat it-- there are some things you can't control
- You don't have to do it or know it all-- don't be afraid of what you don't know-- take action and fix things later.
- It's easier to correct a course than to get something going-- how much effort does it take to stop a stopped car?
- Eat healthy-- eat a bag of oreo's how does that feel?
- Exercise-- your body was made for action. You are supposed to sweat. Getting the blood flowing changes everything.
- Serve others-- thinking about others has transformative power.
- Take small steps-- you won't get it all done today. What can you get done today? Write it down and do it.
Use WordPress to Manage Your Website
I help businesses of all sizes set up websites to promote their businesses. I recommend that companies without a dedicated webmaster use WordPress's blogging software as a way to manage their websites.
There are lots of reasons I make this recommendation. Here are some of the top reasons:
- WordPress is one of the easiest yet most powerful Content Management Systems (CMS) around. If you can use a word processor, you can probably figure out how to blog. And if you can do that, you can promote your business.
- You or someone without programming experience can update and maintain your site. You'll need just a little bit more than basic computer skills coupled with desire and you can figure out how to add new pages, upload photos, link to other websites and share information. A couple of years ago I had lunch with Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress at a WordPress camp. He said that when he started WordPress he hoped to make it as easy to get and manage a blog as it is to get and manage a web-based email account such as Hotmail or Gmail.
- There are numerous "themes" or customizable looks that are available for WordPress. You can hire a designer to create a custom them or you can find inexpensive and even free themes that let you customize the look and feel of your site. The beauty of themes is that you can change the look and feel for the entire site in just a few clicks. Here are a couple to consider for "premium" themes: StudioPress.com and Press75.com. In fact, it's quite possible that very few people will recognize your site as a "blog" if you make an effort. Here is an example of a site that I helped a friend do to promote her Mexico Beach Rentals business.
- Search engines LOVE sites that are built on WordPress. In addition to lots of default options that are designed to help your website be found, you can find and install additional features built by 3rd parties that help increase your visibility. For example, I helped a friend set up www.cycleandstyle.com and within less than a month they started coming up in top spots on Google for 3 word searches like "Ladies Cycling Fashion" and "Women's Cycling Fashion".
Of course there are some disadvantages too but on a whole they tend to be offset by the above advantages. Disadvantages include:
- The inability to have 100% custom pages for each page in your site. You are forced to use a template of some sort.
- Because WordPress is managed by a software license known as GPL, the source code is available to everybody. There are hackers who attempt to exploit weaknesses to gain control of a website using the software. This is relatively rare and WordPress immediately addresses it but if you have sensitive information, this may not be the best solution for you.
- If you use free or even a premium theme, other sites may have the same look that you do. Given that there are more than a trillion websites in the world, the fact that a few thousand people are using the same site design to you should not cause much of a concern. Having said that, some customizations and custom graphics can serve to make your site more unique to you.
How did a website look a year ago, how about 5 years ago?
Is it possible to see what a website looked like a year or more in the past? In other words, how can we see what a website looked like before it was updated?
Fortunately there is a really cool organization that is dedicated to preserving the "history" of the Internet. Its ambitious goal is to save a copy of websites as they are updated.
I use this frequently to see what a site looked like before it was updated. Or if you're researching a company, it might be a good place to see what it looked like in the past.
The service is not always available both in terms of the site you may want to see and the availability of their servers and even when it is available it is generally pretty slow and frequently doesn't show pictures that may have been part of the site. But when it actually does work, it's really pretty cool.
It's the "Way Back Machine" by the "Internet Archive". Here is a link: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
A word about the Internet Archive from their website:
"The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public."
What is a blog?
I remember asking this question several years ago and remember being frustrated that someone couldn’t tell me what it was in simple terms and what I could do with it. So here it is, the simple explanation of what it means to "blog":
A blog lets you easily put things on the Internet. By “things”, I mean your personal thoughts, your public thoughts, music, pictures, videos and pretty much ANYTHING that you can represent in a digital medium.
Okay, so now you know that you can put “things” online, why would you want to? This is where it gets really exciting. You can use a blog to accomplish pretty much anything. Here is a list of some of the top 10 things you can do with a blog.
